Umbrella Renoir

Umbrella Renoir (JP: アンブレラ・ルノワール Anburera Runowāru) is a downloadable playable character in Skullgirls 2nd Encore.

She is the younger of the two Canopy Kingdom princesses, her older sister being Parasoul. Their mother, the Queen Nancy, was the Skullgirl seven years ago.

Development

Umbrella was originally one of the mascots that former Skullgirls creative director, Alex Ahad, made and used for his old personal website "PuG's PuB" since at least October 2001. She was also nicknamed as Umbrella-chan and appeared in a comic along with other Ahad's original characters.

An old live journal by Alex Ahad stated that Umbrella had "raw magical talent, psychic powers, spirit of Aesil."

Umbrella was the first possible DLC character to be revealed in the Keep Skullgirls Growing Indiegogo campaign, at $20,000. She was initially supposed to be a part of the launch cast alongside Squigly, but was moved to be a first-round DLC character because the team needed villains for the story. It has been stated that she is one of the characters who would need to be made playable for the canon Skullgirls storyline to be revealed.

She was announced as a Skullgirls 2nd Encore DLC character on May 6th, 2021.

Name

Hungern, the name of Umbrella's living umbrella, is the German word for "starve" and the Swedish word for "famine". This fits with the theme of the Renoir family's Living Weapons being named after the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Design

Umbrella's design was inspired by the U.S. salt-producing company, Morton Salt. Its products feature a young girl in a yellow raincoat wielding an umbrella in the rain. As such, she has matching boots and a yellow hat. According to Hidden Variable developer Sairus Delaney, Umbrella’s pink hair color is a nod to her being a Skullgirl as far as they know. It is likely a muted version of the red hair color of her father. Her eyes are portrayed as dark pink.

Abilities

Hungern is described as being "[is] actually a bit different" from the other Renoir umbrellas.

It is likely that the Renoirs had avoided using Hungern unless, like in Umbrella's case, it is absolutely necessary. Without Hungern siphoning off her life force, she may already have turned fully Skullgirl. As a side effect of Hungern's power drain, Umbrella's physical development might have been affected.

It is confirmed that Umbrella has innate necromancy power due to her Skullgirl blood, and in the past has (unknowingly?) used it to revive a corpse by being near.

Backstory

Hungern is a Living Weapon, implied to have existed back in Eliza and Samson's time, with Samson calling him an insatiable devourer of people, armies, civilizations and everything in-between. At some point he fell into the hands of the Renoirs. He's in Umbrella's possession ostensibly for her protection, but in truth, she has him because his ability to siphon life energy just by being near him is supposed to be suppressing her dormant Skullgirl power, which she inherited from her mother while she was going through a slow transformation.

Umbrella has so much power that she can use Hungern without any ill effects whatsoever, a feat so shocking that Samson claims that he's never encountered a "monster" like her before. Due to Umbrella seeing Hungern as her best friend, Hungern is protective of her.

Personality

She is somewhat of a carefree, albeit spoiled child.

Hungern prefers spicy food, but really it would eat anything.

Fighting style

A Umbrella alpha teaser trailer revealed Hungern to have a long tongue like grab that can counter zoners like Peacock, making her intangible until she spits out Peacock. The move also bounces the foe off the wall allowing for follow ups. She also has float like Parasoul but her being inexperienced, falls over and causes her to be on the ground. She has a flashkick move where she attacks the opponent multiple times and slams them down leading into follows ups if guessed correctly.

The key factor for Umbrella's fighting style is the Hunger Meter. There are four states that affect the properties of Umbrella's attacks: Satiated (The default form), Ravenous (Her moves come out faster), Overstuffed (Her moves hit harder at the cost of speed), and Starving (Her moves become slower, but not powerful like Overstuffed). With the meter decreasing as time passes by, Umbrella must pay attention to Hunger's state to avoid getting into troubling situations. The Hunger Meter can be filled by doing attacks where Hungern eats the opponent; the less meter Umbrella has, the more actions Hungern can perform during some of them. Hungern can also spit out small bubbles that can be a distraction and big bubbles that not only create puddles when popped, but also allows Umbrella to jump higher or further.

A small attention to detail in one of Umbrella's intros is when she feeds Hungern ice cream and the hunger meter rises in a small proportion.

On Sora's Team

Umbrella joins Sora's team with her older sister, and her older sister's squad, however Iori, and Tenn Kujo saw Umbrella who was stubborn to Parasoul make reminding Tenn of Riku Nanase to Tenn but her power from Nancy's skull heart blood made Tenn feel that Parasoul forbade Umbrella because of Nancy Renoir's actions as her mother who gave birth to Umbrella with a skull heart even Tenn, and IDOLiSH7 especially Riku Nanase felt that Umbrella would be more naive than Riku Nanase then all the heroes were surprised by Umbrella with her crazy nature when her eyes turned into skulls then Nagi Rokuya, Aether, and Gepard chased Umbrella because Umbrella was more dangerous than Riku Nanase who had asthma then Iori Izumi said that Umbrella had killed most of the villains so the villains were annoyed then chased her to be killed by villains making Riku Nanase confirm even though she was successfully found then calm her for control her power by heroes for not trouble again meanwhile Hikaru Akatsuki, Tenn Kujo, Hayato Yuzuki, Yusuke Aoi, Naofumi, Isogai, Kaede Kayano, Rimuru, and several heroes know reason Parasoul wanted Umbrella to be monitored her by heroes because she is worriwd then want her still alive, but Tenn, Mitsuki Izumi, 315 Production, IDOLiSH7, Nagi Rokuya, and all the heroes, Julius Zagan Analeit along with Parasoul kept their meeting with Franz Renoir a secret from Umbrella even though Umbrella would find out.

but after learning truth about her mother, she and her older sister will change future so that it is not like her mother before especially She is friends with Benio, Kayano, Melty, Velvet, Yoichi, Sasuke, Mithos, Lukius, Dragonia, Genki, and Another hero who has an older brother, and his older sister seems to especially She hates Severin, Yuto, Malty, Artorius, Shinji Matou, and other villains as big sister, and big brother that abandoned their little brother, and their little sister especially She calls Malty an evil red-haired grandmother who makes Melty, Melty friends, and Naofumi suffers so that Malty is annoyed with his evil friends about her saying even though Malty is similar to Parasoul but she doesn't like cruel behavior more than Parasoul, Umbrella turn out likes Ren, Itsuki, and Naofumi but turn out She's disgusting with Motoyasu because She's dislike his did it that obsessed to girl especially to Filo until Umbrella befriend with Melty, and Filo,

She is friend Class 3-E, Umbrella is IT's main nemesis after IT was attacked by Hungern with Hungern biting IT, especially Bill Denbourgh, and his friend Bill surprised that Umbrella was like Georgie in form of his clothes when he died Georgie was wearing the same raincoat, especially IT was not happy with Umbrella, especially that she reincarnated Georgie as Bill's younger brother had been killed by IT as an evil clown especially She's archenemy of Ragyo, Nui, Relius, Yuto, and other villains that relate with her friends especially Her surprised about relationship between Class 3-E, and Hero but Isogai said that the reason Annie was like that because of her past even though her didn't like Annie about her in tv but she little friendly with Annie to help Annie from Class 3-E's advice because it helped him talk to Annie made Annie helped by Class 3-E because it helped her talk to Umbrella especially her is enemy of Tomoki Iwahashi, King, Nurarihyon, Backbeard, Mora, Martha child, Evil Yokai, Adam, Hibiki Otonashi, Goddess, Natsuko, and Malty especially Her became Misumi's student especially Umbrella like Yuno Rembrant from Misumi's words made Kuzunoha, Misumi's student, and Rembrant's company surprised including Yuno, and Sif also surprised about Umbrella especially Parasoul like Sif especially Tomoki was annoyed because Umbrella called him a terrible man making Tomoe, and Kuzunoha laugh especially Umbrella hated Lily, Limia, and Gritonia for being rude to her sister, Misumi, and the Heroes especially Umbrella hates Hibiki Otonashi, Sion as a terrible woman.
