In Aselia[]
early years[]
Oscar was born into the aristocratic Dragonia family, the second son who is said to have connections to the Asgard royal family. His older half-sister is Teresa Linares , who had been conceived by his father out of wedlock with a woman of low birth. After her mother died, her father brought her into his house as a maid because his wife didn't think much of her and didn't want to take her into the family. Teresa reports that Oscar was the only one in the family to refer to her as a sister. A close sibling love developed between the two.
Oscar was eventually sent to the Abbey to strengthen the Dragonia family's connection to the Church. Teresa followed him out of concern, and the two quickly rose among the exorcists to the positions of praetors, within which they took the position of consuls.
In Tales of Berseria[]
Oscar first encounters Velvet Crowe in Titania , when she tries to escape from there. A fight erupts between him, the Malakhim who accompany him, and Velvet, who of Seresis accompanied. During the fight, however, one of his malakhim turns into a young dragon and attacks him. After Seres throws herself protectively in front of Velvet and is mortally wounded in the process, Seres asks her to be devoured in order to give Velvet her power. Velvet complies with this request and is then strong enough to defeat the young dragon and severely injure Oscar with a fireball. This leaves him with a severe burn on his face that extends through his left eye. Forced to retreat, he returns to the abbey.
After the heroes first contacted Dyle and used his knowledge to blackmail the Hellawes Boatmen's Guild into repairing their ship at the Figahl Ice Spires , Oscar meets his sister at the Church of Hellawes in the heroes' absence, who is stationed there and which he wanted to visit on his way back to the capital. Teresa is horrified to find out what happened to him and he tells her that he was attacked by a woman with black hair and fiery eyes, causing Teresa to turn to Velvet Croweremembered whom she had encountered earlier on the Hellawes road. Oscar asks Teresa to take care of herself, as this woman will pose a danger even to an experienced praetor. Teresa promises to do so and successfully cheers him up, telling him that such a small mistake doesn't mean the end of the world. Oscar appreciates the comfort, noting that his sister is wearing the earrings he gave her. Satisfied that the earrings look as good on her as he expected, Oscar finally says goodbye.
When the heroes first visit the Empyrean Throne to fight Artorius Collbrande , Oscar appears with Teresa, Melchior Mayvin , and Eleanor Hume to aid Artorius. Oscar thought Shigure Rangetsu would help him, but Artorius tells him that he's training and wants to see his blood spilled more than anyone anyway.
Oscar meets the heroes again in the Temple of Palamedes , where they suspect a Therion and want to separate him from Innominat . Oscar wants to protect the therion, Kamoana , so she doesn't lose her earth pulse pointis separated. Eleanor demands an answer from him about what the Priory intends to do with Therions, and Oscar rebuffs her, saying that she is better off knowing little. Eleanor still wants to know since she killed Kamoana's mother, and Oscar understands that the Therion must have devoured the demon. He tells Eleanor not to take it too seriously, since the demon was a necessary sacrifice to end the suffering in the world. However, Eleanor counters that this woman was not just any demon, but a mother who had wanted to protect her daughter. She begins to cry and Oscar searches for the right words to explain these actions anyway. As he tries to do so, however, he is attacked by Velvet and thrown against the wall with a powerful kick. from which he bounces and falls lifeless to the ground. Velvet tells him that making a girl cry is improper. The heroes take Kamoana with them, leaving Oscar behind.
Armatizing with a Wind Malak, Oscar threatens to lose control Once again in the absence of the heroes, Artorius in the Empyrean Throne grants Oscar a new, experimental Arte that is unfinished and could cost the life of the user. Teresa finds out about this and seeks out Artorius, Melchior, Shigure, and Oscar to see if it's true. Melchior reports to her that they have exhausted the theory of this species and must now put it into practice. Horrified, Teresa understands that Oscar is supposed to use the Arte in the fight against Velvet and requests that she do it in his place. However, her physical strength is not sufficient for this, so she wants to be sent as his support, which she is also refused, as otherwise she would wipe out the opponent before Oscar even gets to use the arte. Shigure confesses to her that he sees noble behavior behind their actions, but that this would ruin the plans of the abbey, whereupon Artorius tells him to remain silent. Oscar explains to Teresa that he volunteered to try the Arte to atone for his failures on Titania and Palamedes. Teresa still wants to come, but Artorius relieves her of her duties as an exorcist and steals Malak Number One from her . To carry out their plans, they need a Malak of unusually high potential, which is the case with Number One, which is close to Laphicet's equalis. Number One is transferred to Melchior, and Teresa is devastated. To comfort her, Oscar turns to her and says that he would like some of her cooking again when he gets home, like a piece of the quiche she used to make. Oscar then turns to Artorius, who already knows what he desires, and Artorius promises to make Teresa exorcist again once his mission is complete. Oscar agrees, says goodbye to his sister, and leaves to head to Bairdmarch .
In Bairdmarsh, Oscar awaits the heroes to protect the Therion "Dis" from them and to try the new arte in the fight against them. Teresa accompanies the heroes, whom Oscar is desperate to rescue, offering herself as a hostage to prevent him from using the Arte. Oscar is horrified to learn that Teresa is in Velvet's hands, and Eleanor wants to know what the Abbey actually means by the "sanity" she keeps talking about. Oscar is furious and accuses the heroes that their idea of sanity is to hold his sister hostage and threaten her death, to which Eleanor hesitates and says nothing. Oscar agrees to put down his gun, but throws the sword at Velvet, who deflects it, allowing Teresa to escape and flee to him. Oscar now considers her safe, but Teresa attacks and knocks him out to protect him. Velvet tells Teresa to keep her deal and leave with Oscar, but Teresa can't do that because it would make him look bad. Teresa reveals that she is receptive to Innominat's power and allows Dis to eat her in order to merge with her. The heroes manage to stop Teresa. However, Oscar has now woken up again and wants to comfort Teresa because she has already done so much for him. He thanks her for always being there for him and taking care of him because his parents' attention was always exclusively on his older brother, the heir to the Dragonias. Oscar begs her to keep watching over him, and he's determined to destroy the Lord of Mischief . He summons his wind malak and uses the new arte: the armatization .
Oscar and Teresa seek a conversation with Velvet, in whose body their souls reside As the unfinished Oscar merged with his malak, Oscar fights relentlessly against the heroes, threatening to lose control of his malak, leaving both he and the malak on the verge of turning into dragons. Velvet is to devour him before she does, which she accidentally does when Oscar is about to attack Laphicet. Horrified by her own actions, Velvet turns to Teresa, who has seen this and is in severe shock. Through tears, Teresa tells that Oscar gave her the earrings he was supposed to give to his future wife, the woman who means the most to him. Oscar had told her that she was that woman. Velvet is distraught and understands that she had just done to Teresa what Artorius had done to her. Out of anger, Teresa attacks her too, and out of desperation, Velvet devours her too.
The souls of Teresa and Oscar are now united in Velvet. Velvet strikes up a conversation with them as they head to Meiricho to awaken the four elemental Empyreans . This requires the souls of four high-ranking praetors, and with Oscar and Teresa two have already been collected. Velvet tells the two that she won't apologize for their actions and they feel that an apology wouldn't make up for their sins anyway, which Velvet knows. The two explain to her that no matter how many times they are reincarnated, they will always do the same thing. Velvet replies that this is also the case with her.
Power and Abilities[]
Oscar's class is that of a swordsman and first-class daemon executioner, otherwise known as a praetor. He fights with a flat-end sword, not hoping to do any unwanted damage, but knowing how to control a serious situation. In his human form his artes resembles sword-based artes from previous entries in the series, their Japanese names being often English synonyms for their English-localized names, for example "Heavenly Torrent" is based on Sorey's Heavenly Torrent, but is called Rising Blast. He also has malakhim in his service. These malakhim act as a vanguard, protecting him from minor threats, as he still holds some value in their lives not to have them injured. As Failed Oscar ("Unfinished Armatus Oscar"), he armatizes with a wind malak, retaining Wind armatus hidden artes from Tales of Zestiria; he gains a mystic arte called Sylphid Blaze in this form.
