Design[]
Appearance[]
Full-body view of Maddox. Lineart of Maddox depicting him from different angles.
Maddox closely resembles his descendant Gavin Sogetsu. He is a tall boy with blue eyes and neatly styled purple-black hair with an ahoge (a strand of hair standing up at the top). His fringe is styled into a point with two large bangs framing his eyes and two smaller ones between those and his fringe. The rest of his hair clipped back over his ears with a cross-shaped hairpin. Maddox wears a black overlapping jacket with a white lining, silver cuffs and a blue line over the left side of his body connected to a silver ring clipped onto his jacket. He also wears dark grey pants with a Deck box strapped to his right thigh by a cord tied in the same manner as the ring on his jacket, and charcoal slip-on shoes with long cuffs, and grey soles and bindings.
When he disguises himself as a client for UTS, Maddox wears a purple wig, orange sunglasses, a large yellow scarf, a gold watch, and a pale blue suit with a pink waistcoat and white undershirt. The colors resemble The☆Professor Gavin's outfit.
Personality[]
Maddox presents himself as strict and no-nonsense, dedicated to upholding the principles of The Secrecy and enforcing them. He is depicted as honorable, both in positive and negative aspects; during his Rush Duel with Yudias Velgear, he consoled him over struggling with Tributing his monsters, assuring him it wasn't meaninglessly sacrificing them, while he previously refused to Rush Duel Yuhi Ohdo because he was careless enough to leave his cards outside. After Yudias defeated him, Maddox kept his word to leave him alone as long as he didn't cause trouble.
By the second season, Maddox's personality has become incredibly conflicted between his loyalty to his friends and to The Secrecy. Despite his heart being in the right place, his actions often serve to oppose his good intentions causing him act out in in temper tantrums. He then begins to spiral and behave incredibly impulsively, with the hope of someone scolding him to set him straight. After defeating Makuto, Maddox appears to have reverted to his old personality.
Despite his stoic façade, Maddox is prone to suddenly exclaiming cat and chemistry puns after uttering certain words.
Voice/Mannerisms[]
Maddox often inserts random science and chemistry turns into his sentences, and also tends to speak in cat and chemistry puns.
Etymology[]
"Manabu" may come from 学ぶ, meaning "to study." The kanji itself means "study" and also makes up part of Gavin Sogetsu's Japanese name, Gakuto (学人). Maddox's "Commander Study" persona may be a reference to the possible meaning of his name. "Maddox" means "son of Maddoc" in Welsh; "Maddoc" itself means "fortunate", and may have been inspired by theoretical chemist John Maddox.
Biography[]
History[]
Maddox was born to be the heir of the Sogetsu Style, and trained to master all types of martial arts, but he hated having to use it to hurt people. One day, he met Graves, who he played with to get him through his days training. Once his instructors found this out, he was sent away to the mountains for intense training. On return, Graves had gone, leaving only paw-prints that led to larger footsteps by a broken fence. Believing that Graves had been taken by aliens, Maddox left the Sogetsu Style to join The Secrecy to find and save Graves.
First Arc[]
Maddox and Meowdestar watched footage of Yuhi and Yuamu Ohdo, who ran UTS, disappearing into an invisible spaceship they had been tracking. Maddox decided to investigate more thoroughly, and knowing UTS also took on odd jobs he disguised himself as a client and asked for their help in locating his dog. However Yuamu instantly realized he was lying due to spotting Meowdestar's hair on his clothes instead of dog hair, and Maddox and Meowdestar revealed themselves, Maddox confiscating cards from Yuhi that had come in contact with an alien and refusing to Rush Duel him over the matter for being so careless. The alien Maddox had been tracking, Yudias Velgear, then entered the room and claimed half the blame lay with him as Yuhi had been showing him how to Rush Duel, talking Maddox into Rush Dueling him by appealing to his warrior's spirit with the condition Maddox would let them go if he lost. Maddox and Yudias Rush Dueled outside, Maddox dealing damage on his first turn with his "Nitro Hounds", but Yudias Summoned several Galaxy Type monsters, including the 1600 ATK Level 4 "Transam Linac" and depleted over half of Maddox's LP. Maddox counterattacked with "Blast Examiner", destroying all of Yudias' monsters and reducing him to 500 LP, but on his next turn Yudias hesitated to move. Having noted Yudias' reaction to his own Tribute Summon and the card he'd drawn, Maddox deduced Yudias had drawn a high-Level monster, but that he didn't want to sacrifice his own monsters needlessly. Maddox assured Yudias it wasn't needless, as the monsters they Tributed had entrusted their Duelists with victory, and was shocked when a spotlight shone on Yudias as he celebrated gaining new knowledge. Yudias then Tribute Summoned "Galactica Oblivion", defeating Maddox. Maddox agreed to let them go, but chastised the Ohdo twins for almost engaging the eighty Secrecy agents on the premises. To Maddox's shock, Yuamu revealed Yudias' spaceship Varivelgear, explaining it could change its size and contained 8.88 million Velgearians. Maddox and Meowdestar quickly retreated with as much dignity as they could, Maddox warning Yudias and the Ohdo twins not to cause problems.
Maddox and Meowdestar learned of serial attacks across Mutsuba Town and tracked down the culprit, Chupataro Kaburagi, though UTS had already found him. Chupataro refused to be arrested, so Yuamu challenged him to a Rush Duel, a prospect Maddox agreed with after Yudias reminded him a Rush Duel was the tool of a warrior. During the Duel Maddox learned Chupataro intended to collect as many "Princess of the Flock - Miss Mutton" as possible in hopes of meeting the real one, prompting Maddox to dub him a dangerous alien. Yuamu successfully defeated Chupataro and got him to stop his attacks, allowing Maddox and Meowdestar to take him away. Chupataro proved uncooperative to interrogation, eventually showing Maddox a Gold Earth Permit and claiming his family had served as the inspiration for chupacabras, meaning The Secrecy had no jurisdiction over him and forcing them to release him. However, the following Sunday Yuamu called Maddox and explained Yudias had gone missing due to Chupataro's actions, and had tracked them to the Mutsuba Heavy Machinery Garbage Collection Site #8. Maddox, Meowdestar and several Secrecy agents arrived just in time to save Yuhi from being attacked by Chupataro and arrested him, warning him his Gold Earth Permit would be revoked for trespassing, Maddox ignoring Chupataro's protests. They let Yuhi and Yudias go free due to their aid in capturing Chupataro. Chupataro again refused to cooperate; Maddox was only able to succeed in making him tear up at the mention of his family. Meowdestar revealed to Maddox that Chupataro had been communicating with someone from Velgear, so Maddox and Meowdestar went to Kappa Heavenly Cleaning, where Yudias, Yuhi and Yuamu currently were, to ask Yudias if he knew who it might be. Maddox and Meowdestar later responded to an alert in a warehouse, finding Zuwijo Zwil Velgear and Terza Flatwood with Yudias, Yuhi and Yuamu. They successfully captured Terza, but Zuwijo escaped, much to Maddox's frustration.
Due to their work capturing interstellar kriminals, Maddox and Meowdestar were given an afternoon off, which they spent at CAFÉ. Unfortunately Yuhi and Yudias drove through their table on an out-of-control tractor, scooping Maddox and Meowdestar up. They were informed the tractor couldn't be stopped unless Yudias answered all 100 Saikyo Rush Duel questions, a requirement that prevented the more experienced Maddox from answering himself. Maddox and Meowdestar were forced to watch Yudias slowly answer the questions, and he reached the 100th question as the tractor drove towards a cliff. Yudias struggled with the final question, naming all the Types in the game, but eventually recited them all in a rap, successfully stopping the tractor on the edge of the cliff. A pigeon then perched on the tractor, overbalancing it, though they were rescued by Varivelgear.
Maddox and Meowdestar investigated another alien report, leading to Mutsuba Cable Studio. Maddox spotted a small shadow entering the live stage and he, Meowdestar and the Secrecy agents accompanying them barged onstage, but found no trace of the alien and sat in the audience after the MC asked them to. They watched the ensuing Rush Duel between Yuamu and Immi Imimi, Maddox asking in bewilderment what was going on after the Duel concluded and the girls claimed they had been acting conflict between them, but Meowdestar suddenly sensed traces of an alien. To Maddox's surprise, Immi chose him as the second Duelist to represent the local team, Dueling her dog Graves, the same Graves that Maddox had known while training. Maddox was overjoyed to see Graves, but shocked when Graves transformed and revealed he was an alien, accusing Maddox of abandoning him. Graves told Maddox he would be forgiven if he won their Rush Duel, but would become Graves and Immi's dog if he lost, conditions Maddox agreed to. Although Graves Summoned the high-Level "Mean Mutt Duke Doberguardian", Maddox was able to lower its ATK and destroy it with "Blast Examiner", strategies Graves congratulated Maddox's Sogetsu Style for. Surprised Graves knew the name, Maddox explained the Sogetsu Style and his past to everyone present, claiming he didn't regret leaving Sogetsu Style as it had allowed him to meet Graves again. Graves in turn revealed he had tried to infiltrate Sogetsu Style through Maddox to destroy it with his Mean Mutt Style. He Summoned "Mean Mutt Sacred Shiba" and revived "Drainu", depleting most of Maddox's LP. Deciding the experiment was over, Maddox warned Graves he would be stopped if he intended to disturb the peace and he Summoned "Chemicalized Salamander", using its effect to take advantage of the large number of monsters Graves had sent to the Graveyard to lower the ATK of his monsters and defeat him. After the Duel Graves burst into proud tears, explaining he had long given up the Mean Mutt Style to become Immi's protector and had simply wanted to test Maddox's skills, begging forgiveness for manipulating him in the past. Maddox forgave Graves, accepting that Graves was happy by Immi's side.
Although Maddox's victory had won the matches for the local team, Maddox not being a UTS member convinced everyone to continue the Duels. Before they could, Chupataro broke through a wall and demanded to Rush Duel. Maddox was shocked Chupataro had escaped the Secrecy Headquarters and ordered his capture after learning they couldn't contact HQ, though Chupataro threatened everyone in the room. Graves was unable to stop Chupataro, having used up his power Dueling Maddox, so Yudias accepted Chupataro's challenge despite Maddox and Yuhi warning him they didn't know Chupataro's plans. Yudias gained a significant lead over Chupataro when the latter used a Trap to reduce the ATK of his monster just to draw "Princess of the Flock - Miss Mutton". To Maddox's shock, a strange substance emerged from Chupataro's Duel Disk when he Summoned "Miss Mutton", physically materializing her. Maddox then learned Terza had orchestrated the escape of Chupataro and several other aliens, having been captured on purpose. Princess of the Flock - Miss Mutton destroyed Yudias' monsters and physically attacked him, so Maddox tried to stop the Duel, but Yudias continued after learning a monster physically materializing was not a rule violation. Miss Mutton attacked Yudias again during his own turn, his monsters unable to protect him as they were still only Solid Vision, but Yudias again insisted on Dueling fairly to win, succeeding in Summoning and powering up "Galactica Oblivion" to defeat Miss Mutton, causing her to vanish. Maddox and the Secrecy agents had Chupataro and his Duel Disk taken away afterwards.
Chupataro claimed to have been tricked by Zuwijo before losing consciousness, so Maddox and Meowdestar visited the UTS Main Office to interrogate Yudias over his whereabouts. Yudias didn't answer and the Ohdo twins told Maddox to stop interrogating him as Yudias wouldn't lie, a statement Maddox admitted he knew to be true after Meowdestar's agreement. After Maddox complimented the Duel Rice Crackers London Kassidy had provided, Yudias asked what would happen to Zuwijo if The Secrecy caught him, and Maddox explained Zuwijo's likely sentence of cryostasis, sharply declaring that he was doing all he could and asking of all Yudias could do was plead and beg before departing. Despite Maddox's harshness, he structured his search to give the UTS group a small lead in their own efforts. As they continued searching for Zuwijo, Maddox worried that Zuwijo had left the town and assured Meowdestar it wasn't her fault she had trouble tracking old alien traces. They were informed an alien had been detected and rushed to the location, but found Teru Kawai there. Kawai denied he was working with Zuwijo, claiming that he wanted to witness what concerned the future of all aliens on Earth, indicating Zuwijo was at Mutsuba Tower.
Maddox and Meowdestar hurried to Mutsuba Tower, shocked to see the massive "Voidvelg Hecatoncheir" towering above the Tower, but Zuwijo had already materialized it with the Earthdama by the time they reached the roof, leaving The Secrecy powerless to stop the Rush Duel. After Yuhi failed to create a new Earthdama for Yudias, Meowdestar told Maddox the Duel was out of their hands and Maddox learned the power of Earthdama depended on the Duelist using it. During the Duel Maddox learned Mutsuba Cable were broadcasting the match and tried to have it stopped, but Immi and Yuamu instead suggested using the opportunity to convince the townspeople it was special effects. Yudias destroyed "Hecatoncheir, but to Maddox's shock Zuwijo Summoned "Voidvelg Requiem" and used the Earthdama's "Egil Velgear Gyurudo" to clad himself with it after its power was spread across Mutsuba Town. The Earthdama's power partially materialized monsters from Duelists' Decks across the town, including Maddox's "Dynamo Might", and caused Yuhi to collapse. As Maddox tried to find the source of the phenomenon, Yuamu suggested he check the power source of Mutsuba Tower; to his shock, Maddox learned the tower was operating and Yuamu explained her belief Zuwijo was spreading the Earthdama with Mutsuba Tower's radio transmitter. Maddox suggested stopping the Duel, but Yuamu revealed Yuhi's soul had been trapped inside "Voidvelg Requiem" and worried doing so could be dangerous. Asaka Mutsuba then used her Heavy Cavalry to remove the Earthdama from Mutsuba Tower, dematerializing most of the monsters. After Yuamu conveyed the unconscious Yuhi's request for Yudias to defeat Zuwijo, Yudias was able to do so by destroying "Requiem" with "Galactica Oblivion", freeing Yuhi's soul. Maddox immediately ordered his agents to capture Zuwijo, but Terza fled with him before they could do so. Yuhi soon awoke, and admitted he didn't believe Zuwijo to be as bad as they thought given his restraint while clad in "Requiem", while Yudias believed Zuwijo to be hiding something.
Second Arc[]
Maddox and Meowdestar learned that someone had been visiting the Golosseum in the Alien Underground, and visited the Golosseum themselves to deduce the identity of the intruders. They discovered Yudias, Yuhi and Yuamu at the Golosseum and confronted them, Maddox being both concerned for their safety and incensed the trio were trespassing in The Secrecy jurisdiction. To Maddox's surprise, Director General Ranran Nanahoshi, who Maddox learned had been Meowdestar's first partner, arrived and declared her intention to close the Golosseum despite Maddox's suggestion they should consider the wishes of the residents. The Ohdo twins and Yudias briefly escaped, but Maddox and the other Secrecy agents cornered them in the Golosseum arena, where Maddox again disagreed with Ranran over whether to close the Golosseum; Crustacia Venulina suggested they Rush Duel to decide the matter. Though Ranran boasted she had never taken damage, let alone lost a Rush Duel, Maddox easily destroyed her monsters and depleted most of her LP with "Chemicalized Salamander"; Meowdestar explained that Ranran had no real strategy and her win record had come from her subordinates throwing their matches with her. Despite this, Ranran made a surprising comeback on her next turn, Maddox praising his boss's efforts before defeating her on his next turn with "Analyze Phlogiston", ensuring the Golosseum would remain open.
Though the Golosseum remained open, Maddox still tried to insist Yudias and the Ohdo twins left the Alien Underground, but as he argued with Yuhi over the matter, the UTS employees were accosted by a girl in a cloak, demanding to know what they wanted with her master Rovian. Yudias and the twins asked the girl about Yuna Goha, who they were searching for, but the girl refused to answer, violently thrashing Fisher Sky, who she was holding hostage, and losing her temper, prompting Maddox and Meowdestar to worry the girl's aggression would cause a fight. Crustacia suggested a Rush Duel to resolve the argument; a Duel the girl accepted upon seeing Yudias' unusual Duel Disk with the promise she would take all of their Duel Power if she won, a resource Maddox was unfamiliar with. Maddox returned to the Golosseum with the Ohdo twins to watch Yudias' Rush Duel with the girl and was surprised by her strength. Maddox also learned how Yudias had acquired his Duel Disk and cards from an armored stranger, and came to agree with Yudias and Yuamu's suspicions the stranger may have been Yuna Goha. To Maddox's shock, the girl revealed she was Yuna and activated an Equip Spell Card, a Spell type Maddox had never seen before, powering up her "Sevens Road Magician" and defeated Yudias. As she had promised, the girl took Yudias and the twins' Duel Power, resulting in them being pinned to the ground by the Alien Underground's high gravity, which Ranran explained to them, to Maddox's surprise. After Yudias and the twins were thrown out of the Golosseum, Ranran explained that The Secrecy were investigating Rovian for stealing one of The Secrecy Rings to create the Rush Booters the twins and the aliens used to move around the Alien Underground and suggested UTS didn't get involved any further. Maddox and Meowdestar helped Yudias and the twins back to the train and took them back home.
Maddox and Meowdestar were contacted by Immi Imimi, asking for retrieval from the Alien Underground. As the last trains had departed for the day, Maddox and Meowdestar used a handcar that Maddox operated to travel along the rails. They arrived just as Yuhi and Yuamu returned from Powloon Castle with Yudias, who had been compressed into a shirt-like form. As Maddox was exhausted from operating the handcar, he allowed Yuhi and Graves to operate it on the way back.
Maddox and Meowdestar brought technology from The Secrecy to assist in restoring Yudias, including a pilotable robot body, but initially only succeeded in hiding his condition from Galixon Townsend and Bob Briscoe. After they tried reinflating Yudias with the air compressor that Maddox had brought, Graves struck the air compressor, bursting the balloon Yudias was attached to and blasting Yudias into the sky, and Maddox pursued Yudias with the others, tracking him by the cards that fell from him and recalling the memories associated with them, including Maddox's own loss to "Galactica Oblivion". To Maddox's horror he spotted Yudias drifting into the Mutsuba Recycling Plant, interrupting Asaka Mutsuba's lecture on the plant to find Yudias being fed into the recycling machine and coming out as a pair of gloves. Distraught over the loss of Yudias, the group returned to UTS with the gloves and Yudias' cards. Townsend then arrived with a delivery for Yudias, but before Townsend could take the gloves, Yudias was restored from the contents of the Kappa Heavenly Cleaning box, much to Maddox's joy.
Maddox learned that Yudias had naturally compressed from exhaustion when he reached the Rovian Bandits, who visited the UTS Main Office shortly afterwards with an offer to purchase the premises. Maddox and Meowdestar were quickly angered by Yuna's dismissive attitude towards The Secrecy, but Yudias agreed to consider the offer if Rovian could defeat him in a Rush Duel. Yudias Rush Dueled with a handicap, as he was using Varivelgear as a Duel Disk in place of his own and it lacked the necessary mass to produce the full number of Zones. Yudias made a comeback with an Equip Spell Card of his own, "Galactica Xiphos", which to Maddox's shock, Yudias claimed Zuwijo had given him; Maddox was unable to believe that Zuwijo would help Yudias. Maddox then received a call from Ranran, who informed them an object had entered their solar system; Rovian's Chapeauian partner Camos claimed it to be the Great King of Terror. Yudias and Rovian continued their Rush Duel, Maddox shocked by Rovian's use of two Equip Spells on the same monster, but during the Rush Duel the ground opened beneath them to allow a spaceship - the Space Treasure that the Rovian Bandits had been looking for - to be launched, piloted by Immi's manager London Kassidy and Tab Pitman. To Maddox's shock, Meowdestar fervently tried to leap aboard the shuttle but missed, though fortunately Maddox caught her. Townsend spotted Yuamu clinging to the back of the shuttle, and though Maddox believed the Rush Duel needed to be aborted to rescue her, Yuhi conveyed Yuamu's wishes for Yudias to continue the Rush Duel. Yudias retrieved "Galactica Xiphos" and equipped it to "Galactica Oblivion" unlocking what Maddox believed to be the true power of the Equip Spell, but Rovian brushed off Yudias' efforts to have her apologize for slandering the Ohdo twins and increased the stats of her "Bandijo the Battle Ballad" to prevent Yudias from attacking. Maddox worried this was the end for Yudias, but Yudias' resolve to win triggered the missing thruster of Varivelgear to return to him, in addition to activating a larger spaceship beneath the entirety of Mutsuba Town that enclosed the town within an energy shield and began launching into space. With all his Monster Zones, Yudias was able to Summon another monster to further empower "Galactica Oblivion" and allow it to attack, defeating Rovian, who Yudias parted with on good terms.
On Sora's Team[]
Maddox joins Sora's team along with Yuhi, Yudias, and Yuamu with Varivelgear carrying 8,880,000 of its citizens in his airship although most of the heroes are shocked by Yudias's blunt confession but he, Yuhi, Yuamu, and Yudias are still treated as friends and family
