Hugo Baint von Renxandt, formerly Natsume Kengo (夏目健吾), is one of the reincarnated students from Japan and the main antagonist of the prolepsis. Reborn as the crown prince of the Renxandt Empire, he abused his newfound power until he was stripped of it by Shun and Filimøs. However, rather than repent, this only prompted him to vow vengeance.
Appearance[]
In the anime, Natsume's appearance in his previous file was fairly similar to what he looks like after reincarnating. The only differences being that he had a slightly slimmer figure and lacked the white hair strands of his reborn self.
Hugo is characterised by his two-tone hair, that is characterised by yellowish streaks, and brown eyes. Later in the series, he is seen wearing a fur coat on him and overall made from monster parts to further enhance his combat abilities.
Personality[]
Hugo Renxandt wasn't always the megalomaniac he is now. Before being reborn, he was generally perceived as the class "king," with a frank, egotistical attitude and not afraid to hide his thoughts. He often took things a bit too far, but was held in check by his friend Issei Sakurazaki, who understood him well. Issei passed away in the new world, and Natsume was left alone as Hugo Renxandt, prince of the Renxandt Empire.
Although he indiscriminately hates Shun due to their incompatible personalities, he was charming enough be the leader of the boys in his previous life. If he had been able to enter university, work in part-time jobs and enter society as an adult, he would likely have experienced a smooth and successful life.
Hugo became warped due to not having anyone around him who understood his circumstances, not having anyone he could trust due to the troublesome political situation inside the Empire, and not having had any dissatisfaction about how he had lived his previous life.
As it stands, much of the same happened in the new world when Shun and him came face to face. Hugo had finally found his peers from his previous life, only to find that Shun was the center of attention among them, and so Hugo's hatred never changed, and he was left alone to fend for himself in his despair. The true turning point for Hugo's decent into madness was being driven into a corner and abandoned by his old teacher Okazaki Kanami, now known as Filimøs.
At the time when he first met Shun after reincarnating, if he hadn’t tried to avoid Shun due to being aware that they didn’t get along in their previous lives, and if his hard to understand SOS had been noticed, perhaps the end result could also have been different.
Synopsis[]
Hugo's first meeting with his old classmates was after he entered the Analeit Kingdom Academy thanks to the contact of his teacher Okazaki Kanami. There he met Yamada Shunsuke, Oshima Kanata, Shinohara Mirei and Hasabe Yuika all with new names and appearances.
At the academy, Hugo hoped that everything would go back to the way it was in Japan, him as the Class Leader and Shun as someone he never stood out for. Unfortunately, for him, his dream was brutally crushed when Shun began to attract the attention of the world in part because he was known as a prodigy. The friction between Hugo and Shun did not take long to begin and it was decided that the two should be kept apart as much as possible. Hugo's envy continued to build until it exploded.
During an excursion to the mountain by the Academy Hugo decided to try to assassinate Shun, but his plan was foiled by Filimøs and Hugo ended up being stripped of all his stats and abilities, and confined to house arrest.
The Fall of Analeit
Hugo's revenge soon became apparent. With the help of Lust, Hugo hypnotized important people within the Analeit Kingdom and the Divine Word Religion, including Cylis, Sue, Yuri, and Katia. Thanks to the victims of his hypnosis and the help of the Demons, Hugo framed Shun for the murder of his father and began a coup in the Kingdom.
Elf Village Battle
Now Hugo set his sights on Filimøs as the next target for his revenge. Taking advantage of the death of the Old Hero Hugo used the church to proclaim himself as the new Hero and blame the elves as the cause of the Coup d'état. He led the armies of the Renxandt Empire, Holy Kingdom of Alleius, and other allied countries into the Great Garam Forest to destroy the elves.
At the time of his arrival at the Elf Village, Shun and his company were already there ready for battle. The battle broke out at the moment of the fall of the protective barrier of the elves, Filimøs was the first to meet Hugo and was about to win if it were not for Sophia's intervention, which ended with Filimøs seriously injured. Shun arrived just in time to save Filimøs and continue the battle with Hugo.
Suddenly an elite army of the Demon Army appeared in the rear of the Renxandt Empire army which was completely annihilated in minutes.
Hugo was finally defeated by Shun, when trying to ask Sophia for help, she told him that he had already done his job, when he realized that he was only used, he attacked Sophia in a fit of anger, however Sophia defeated him.
Relationships[]
- Schlain "Shun" Zagan Analeit
- Former classmate from Japan and rival. In the original world, Shun and Hugo wasn't close with each other due their clashing personalities, Shun's calm demeanor and Hugo's more assertive nature means they were never in the same clique. In the beginning of their reincarnation, they were neutral towards each other. As the series progress, instead of seeing Shun with kinship like with many of the former reincarnated humans who end up in the new and unkind world, Hugo sees Shun as an obstacle, stealing his limelight in the new world that he once had in class. Instead of addressing his insecurities, Hugo has secretly plotted numerous events to harm and even kill Shun. Driving many of the conflicts in the series.
- Filimøs Harrifenas
- Former homeroom teacher in Japan. Before they were reincarnated, Hugo wasn't very respectful towards Ms Oka, his teacher. This carry forward into the new world, without his former best friends to manage his behavior, he became increasing belligerent towards her, as he sees her attempts in trying to rein in his behavior as meddling. Ultimately, the two became enemies when Hugo tried to assassinate Shun, forcing Filimøs to erase many of his abilities using her unique skill. However instead of having a positive effect as she had thought, this only ended up further worsening his behavior as he instead developed a deep murderous hatred for her and became fixated on obtaining vengeance against her instead. As admitted by Hugo, her actions of removing his original skills actually made him much stronger due to the increased negative feelings to regain his power and get revenge against her instead granted him immense [Proficiency], granting him the Lust and Greed Skills respectively that granted him even greater power than he had originally and worsening his psychological issues.
- Yuri Ullen
- Former classmate, acquaintance and the Saint of the group. With the backing from the Word of God Religion later in the series, Yuri joined his faction, often siding with Hugo in encouraging and pushing Shun's faction to surrender. Not much is known about their relationship. As revealed, during their previous lives in Japan, Yuri's previous self was one of the few people in the class to believe that Natsume was not nearly as bad as he made himself out to be.
- Sophia Keren
- At an unknown point in time, Sophia joined his faction as an ally. As his strongest fighter, she was one of Hugo's most valuable assets and often deployed in situations where extra muscle was needed. Despite all of her contributions, however, Hugo was occasionally demeaning toward Sophia with unhappy memories from her past life. In turn, Sophia was merely using Hugo to initiate the Elf Village Battle and cut him off once that goal had been reached. Upon realizing this, Hugo angrily turned on her but was effortlessly cast aside.
- Issei Sakurazaki
- As noted by his fellow classmates, Natsume was very close with his childhood friend Issei, who fully understood his personality and kept him in check back on earth. Natume himself was genuinely grateful to Issei for being the only person who understood him completely and cared for him greatly, with the others who were close enough to him, such as Shinohara, observed that Natsume himself genuinely thought that Issei was his only true friend in the world. As stated by his former classmates, if Issei himself had been alongside Natsume upon being reincarnated as Hugo, his behavior itself would have been much different and he would likely not have gotten any worse than he was on earth.
- Ogiwara
- In their past life, Hugo was stated to be good friends with Ogi as well.
- Feirune
- According to Shun, Natsume and Shinohara seemed to get along pretty well in their previous lives, this is seen where she was able to have a good enough understanding of his personality and knew the true depth of his friendship with Issei. However, Fei later revealed that they were, in fact, never friends. After Hugo tried to assassinate Shun, whatever relationship they had shattered and they now view each other as enemies.
