Hakurou 「, hakurō, lit. "White Old Man"」 is a Majin in service of Rimuru Tempest. An elderly swordmaster whose skill was already legendary even as an unnamed ogre, but after being accepted and named by Rimuru he's only gotten stronger. He serves as the Chief Instructor of Tempest's military and as an executive as well.

Appearance[]

Ogre[]

As an Ogre, Hakurou was a short old man, contrary to the general Ogre physique, with aged silver hair and two white, ivory-like horns protruding from his forehead. His hair was gently wavy and has two bangs dropping from the far side of his horns, and a ponytail tied with a string. He also had pointed ears and has black eye lines on his lower eyelids. Similar to the other Ogres, in the Anime, his skin had a very subtle silver tint to go with his color scheme - a tint so subtle that it's only noticeable if compared to his Kijin form side by side.

His attire consisted of an off white robe with thick black outlines, fastened by a pale brown ribbon on his waist. This whole was also covered another similar robe which was kept unfastened. Finally, he wore a thick pale brown scarf that always covered his mouth, a pair of loose white pants, wooden sandals, black fingerless gloves that attached only to his middle finger over the back of his hands, and a plain looking thin Japanese sword.

Kijin[]

Similar to all evolutions, Hakurou went from a shabby (but sharp) old man to a middle-aged man in his prime.

His hair became more full and sharper (less droopy) and his skin lost its silver tint. His horns shrunk a lot, and perhaps the biggest change he had was his facial structure going from a stubby to one having really sharp and well-defined jaws and chin. Moreover, unknown if he had one in his Ogre stage, he got a long silver goatee (short in the Manga).

His new attire consists of a white overcoat, which in turn was covered on the shoulders and neck by some kind of overwear as well. In the Manga and Light Novel, however, he wears a scarf.

Oni[]

No notable visual changes compared to Hakurou's Kijin stage.

Personality[]

Hakurou is usually calm. Although he's at the age to be someone's grandpa, his spirit is clearly years younger. He's able to correctly identify the skills Rimuru uses to incapacitate Kurobe, Shion, and Souei and the monsters they originate from just by seeing them used once. He trains Tempest warriors (including Rimuru himself) in swordsmanship and is notoriously strict at that. He also believes in teaching Arts as well, showing an understanding that monsters tend to rely too much on their skills.

However, he hates being called "old man". If someone violates this, he'll usually respond by slightly draw his katana and threatening them to "increase the exercise load" or "death", along with a sharp but deadly look. He tends to be analytical in combat, showing his knowledge of skills, magic and even can pick up on deadly intent. Many allies trust his wisdom, since he is renowned as the "Sword Savant".

After learning that he has a daughter, Hakurou has become very doting on her and is quite overprotective with her, even encouraging her to "win" Benimaru's heart and is visibly annoyed when he doubts on taking her as his wife.

Background[]

Hakurou is the grandson of the master swordsman Byakuya Araki. He was the Ogre Tribe's martial instructor and the strongest swordsman of their royal guard. He is also the one that trained Gazel Dwargo in his swordsmanship 300 years ago. Despite Ogres only having an average lifespan of about 100 years, Hakurou miraculously managed to live for over 300 years as an Ogre, before meeting Rimuru and extending his lifespan through evolution into a Kijin.

Story[]

Forest Disturbance Arc[]

Hakurou and his fellow Ogres fought Rimuru after they thought they were the one who attacked their village, but he proved to be too powerful for them. Shuna eventually helped clear up the misunderstanding. After he is given his name, he evolves into a Kijin along with the other Ogres and after the defeat of the Orc Army, he becomes a firm ally to Rimuru.

Demon Lord Awakening Arc[]

During the fight against Falmuth, he is injured, but survives. He later helps Rimuru and his allies fight the Falmuth army. After Rimuru becomes a Demon Lord, he too evolves and becomes a extremely powerful fighter.

Abilities[]

Though Hakurou was nameless, he never ventured out into the world, thus he quietly polished his sword skills. He became the strongest swordsman in the Ogre Tribe's royal guard, even surpassing the tribe's head, despite being a mixed race.

Hakurou is a master swordsman. Having unblemished strength. He is able to mask his presence and body temperature. After being named, magical energy escaped from Hakurou's body, mixed with that of his surroundings, and then reassembled. The amount of energy in his body did not change. However, its quality did. The middle-aged Kijin was reinvigorated, given him the look of being in the prime of his life.

His perception ability is accelerated by a thousand times via Thought Acceleration that he gained from Rimuru when being named.

He uses his sword technique to overwhelm his enemy, not his physical abilities. That's notable based on the fact that while in terms of the usual monster-evaluation criterium of Magicule capacity he is only considered A-Rank, due to his proficiency with the sword and training in various Arts and Gifts from Rimuru's Harvest Festival he reaches Disaster-Rank based on how humans are normally evaluated.

When sparring against Demon Lord Milim, not even his attacks reach her. However, he can put up a fight, which is impressive in itself.

Relationship[]

Jura Tempest Federation[]

Rimuru Tempest[]

Their relationship began in an antagonistic manner, as Hakurou, along with the other ogres, harbored suspicions that he was the masked majin responsible for the destruction of their village. However, once the misunderstanding was resolved and they successfully exposed the true culprit, he swore his allegiance to Rimuru. Over time, his loyalty deepened, transforming them into great allies.

Hakurou assumed the role of Rimuru's swordsmanship instructor, providing lessons aimed at reducing Rimuru's overreliance on his vast reservoir of power. These lessons were particularly valuable for scenarios where Rimuru encountered adversaries who relied solely on their combat techniques. In addition, Hakurou shared insightful counsel to aid Rimuru in his leadership responsibilities.

Benimaru[]

As a former resident and survivor of the now-deceased ogre village, Hakurou had a longstanding connection with Benimaru, dating back to his childhood. He served as Benimaru's mentor in the realms of swordsmanship and combat. Even after falling under Rimuru's leadership, Hakurou maintains his endearing practice of addressing Benimaru as "Young Master," albeit in a more jovial and light-hearted manner.

The bond between them has grown so strong that they are now regarded as family. This unique relationship was solidified when Benimaru married Hakurou's daughter, Momiji.

Shion[]

As a former resident and survivor of the now-deceased ogre village, Hakurou has shared a long history with Shion, having known her since her early childhood. He played a pivotal role in instructing her, as well as the other oni survivors, in the intricate arts of swordsmanship and combat.

However, Hakurou is notably cautious when it comes to Shion's culinary creations, which are infamous for their less-than-pleasant taste. To avoid becoming an unwitting taste tester, he tends to keep his distance from her cooking experiments. Despite this culinary quirk, their relationship remains quite amicable.

Gobta[]

Hakurou's relationship with Gobta is surprisingly harmonious. Serving as Gobta's combat instructor, Hakurou took the young goblin under his wing, imparting his knowledge of combat techniques and swordsmanship. Witnessing Gobta's progress, Hakurou identified substantial potential within him.

Over the course of time, Hakurou and Gobta's interactions have transformed them into something akin to family. Despite this warm bond, Hakurou can't help but be slightly exasperated by Gobta's occasional lapses in intelligence and his proclivity for laziness.

Goblin Riders[]

As the combat instructor Hakurou is very strict in his training with them in the art of combat and swordsmanship.

Kurenai[]

Hakurou has a professional relationship with them.

Yomigaeri[]

Hakurou has a professional relationship with them.

Armed Nation of Dwargon[]

Gazel Dwargo[]

Hakurou meticulously instructed Gazel Dwargo in his rigorous combat and swordsmanship techniques many years ago during his formative years. To his astonishment, news reached Hakurou that Gazel had ascended to the throne as a king and matured into an exceptional warrior.

Their relationship, rooted in the past as master and disciple, has flourished into a strong bond.
