Akainu

Sakazuki, better known by his former Admiral alias Akainu, is one of the main antagonists of the One Piece franchise. A stout follower of the Marine doctrine of "Absolute Justice", he once served as one of the three Marine Admirals alongside Kizaru and Aokiji, but was promoted to Fleet Admiral as Sengoku's successor following the latter's retirement in the wake of the Paramount War. He is known for killing Luffy's brother, Portgas D. Ace, as well as leaving his x-shaped scar on his chest as a reminder of the event that caused Luffy to undergo major changes in his life.

Personality[]

Although he supposedly believes in justice and righteousness, Akainu is a cruel, intransigent, Heartless, hypocritical, and fanatical Psychopath to the motto of "Absolute Justice", which is to punish criminals at any cost, no matter how much they beg for mercy or not, and regardless of the circumstances relating to how the crimes themselves were committed. However, Akainu's extremism is far beyond the average extremist Marine, very much like Hody Jones being a more extreme version of Arlong, and has caused even those that agree with his personal beliefs to question them. and his lack of tolerance for such has led the marines beneath him to fear and hate him, and returns this by not hesitating to kill any who stand in his way. His black-hearted behavior is reviled all across the New World, and the mere sight of him caused veteran New World Pirate Squard to experience a noticeable cold sweat.

Akainu's personal take on the Marine's philosophy is "Thorough Justice," which is to eradicate anything and everything related to the "evil" with extreme prejudice, rationalizing the possibility of even a minuscule target of eradication escaping resulting in a failure, which has led him to destroy a refugee ship full of innocent civilians and attempt to take the young Coby's life when the cadet pleaded to stop the war, extremely angry at the outburst which had wasted his time. His title or alias literal meaning of "Red Dog" seems to reflect on Akainu's tendency to hunt down his target like a hunting dog does its prey once it has a scent, and similarly, Akainu let nothing stop him from actively hunting down a mentally damaged Luffy, knocking aside many who got in his way without actually doing damage beyond this because he was so focused on Luffy, But allowed Marco and Vista to continually interfere with his attempts on Luffy's life. Even then, Akainu was more focused on Luffy for his bloodline as opposed to veteran pirates who were more skilled than Luffy was at the time, and at best, He told them to get out of his way.

This showcases a remarkable amount of shortsightedness for Akainu, as his philosophy of being thorough stopped him from seeing anything beyond his immediate scope as a massive threat, barely taking notice of Blackbeard's attempt at sinking Marineford (although both Sengoku and Garp were fending off the Blackbeard Pirates at the time) and in the end makes him barely anything but a dangerous single-minded murderer, much like the stereotypical view of the criminals of the world. In deed being so distracted by Luffy allowed Whitebeard to launch a sneak attack behind him and be temporarily defeated because of this.

Akainu's extremist beliefs have led him to also label someone a threat because of their own bloodlines, specifically targeting Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace simply because of their respective fathers being criminals as opposed to their own actual actions, and went so far as to declare that even if every other pirate escaped from Marineford alive, he would personally not allow the brothers that chance at all, and actively hunted them down. He even attempted to point out to the Whitebeard Pirates that the person that they were protecting was the son of the Revolutionary Dragon, as if somewhat slightly confused that individuals would dare protect such a man because of his lineage.

Despite (or perhaps because of) Akainu's extremist beliefs Akainu is himself very deceitful and manipulative; traits that showcase Akainu can be crafty and exploitative when needed. Though he believed Ace a threat because he was the son of the Pirate King he knew that Ace did not like this association and used it to his advantage, showing that while he acknowledged that Ace felt shame for his father this was only a weakness to be exploited for Marine victory. He was even willing to feign sympathy towards Squard in an attempt to turn Whitebeard's allies against him.

Another factor that may be contrary or because of his extremist beliefs in heritage Akainu seems to place a degree of stock in the families of the Marines beneath him. Telling his men not to dishonor their families in cowardice by running away from their posts. Akainu believes that families are defined by blood, and is disgusted by the Whitebeard Pirates's familiar bond between themselves, and openly mocks and belittles this, while calling the Whitebeard Pirates following of their late captain's last order to escape as being hypocritical.

Contradicting his own beliefs on heritage and justice, however, Akainu takes a stance of apathy and non-intervention when it comes to the hedonism with the Celestial Dragons and their criminal actions and atrocities, instead he turns a blind eye to these actions not seeing it as his business despite the arguable worse crimes that they repeatedly commit and get away with being worse than anything that most pirates are able to do. Furthermore, Akainu gives no regard for something if it does not reflect well upon the Marine's name. As far as he is concerned the Marines need look credible and if the truth inconveniences it then Sakazuki will, much like the World Government, resort to abridging, altering or ignoring the truth of things such as the Dressrosa Incident to keep such a credible image.

In spite of Akainu's tendency to hunt down his enemies however, he knows when the situation calls for less violent measures. He can even show impressive acts of restraint specifically when Shanks arrived to end the war. Despite fighting his way through many men, and with someone whom he had just seconds before tried to kill right in front of him, Sakazuki instead stood down opting not to fight a Yonko, and did little more than curse Shanks for his arrival and interference when Luffy was able to get away. However, he still did not escalate things to an altercation with the Red-Hair Pirates.

Though Akainu is known to mow down weaker Marines for getting in his way or being a dissenting voice in his views Akainu reserves a certain level of respect and even leniency towards the stronger Marines, if only reserved to the Admirals thus far shown. Issho for example was able to call Sakazuki "Saka-san" without it bothering him even gave him an alternate punishment of capturing the wanted pirates he was supposed to be after as opposed to his usual standard of death sentence (although he was not there in person to deliver such a sentence) and even sparred Kuzan despite their duel being to the death. Akainu is noticeably very cross that Kuzan did not serve under him and his whim of mercy went to waste on him, openly telling the Gorosei that Kuzan had nothing to do with the Navy now that he has resigned despite him now being affiliated with the highly dangerous Blackbeard Pirates.

In the past of under instruction of his former mentor, Zephyr, Akainu shown his great respect for Zephyr as if he was a father-figure to him. But currently, Akainu has no qualms of sending the entire Marines to kill his former mentor and the Neo-Marines in the movie, One Piece: Film Z.

Akainu is also fearless, obstinate, headstrong, merciless and reckless in battle challenging the mighty Whitebeard, and boldly insulting him to get Ace to face him before instead aiming to a than distracted Luffy to kill Ace. Even when hopelessly outmatched and overpowered by the Yonko and being practically helpless for a time, Akainu took advantage of a brief moment to initiate an attack that briefly devastated the pirate, and when he was defeated cursed him in anger. Still Akainu is not above showing surprise at unexpected turns of events such as when Shanks blocked his attack and expectantly arrived, or when he heard that Doflamingo had been defeated.

Akainu is in many ways the incarnation of the World Government's totalitarian system of extremism towards dissenting viewpoints while ignoring the World Government's depravity this caused many high ranking government officials to elect Akainu to be the succeeding fleet admiral over Sengoku's nomination of Kuzan and the government was willing to bestow unprecedented power towards the Marines with Akainu's leadership; however while Akainu is an adamant follower of much of the World Government's viewpoint he is not as tolerant to some of their actions as he is to the Celestial Dragons.

Noticeably Akainu took the matter of Doflamingo's false resignation towards the Gorosei themselves and boldly insulted them for having to adhere to the demands of a single pirate, behavior which eventually descended into a heated argument with the five elders. While perfectly willing to deceive civilians about the nature of Doflamingo's defeat, he was completely intolerant when the World Government kept information that stopped the Marines from understanding the situation at large. This shows that to Akainu criminals being able to utilize the government above the marines as an asset is far beyond what he will tolerate from his superiors.

During the event in Totto Land, Akainu is regretful for his mistakes of not able to kill Luffy 2 years ago. When Kaido and Big Mom formed an alliance, Akainu is shown cautious when he ordered to leave Wano alone since he doesn't have enough military power go against the Beast Pirates and Big Mom Pirates' alliance. After Kaido and Big Mom's downfalls, Akainu shown disbelief that Luffy is an Emperor now. His cautiousness has also forced him to wait for the outcome between Law and Blackbeard. Learning Luffy is in Egghead, Akainu (while still cautious) realized if Vegapunk joins Luffy, it would dealt a blow within the Marine's military power. Hearing Kizaru is heading to Egghead, Akainu ordered his troops to warn Rob Lucci to not fight Luffy until Kizaru and the Marines' arrival but only for the CP0 agent to disobey the Fleet Admiral's direct order and engaged Luffy.

Allies[]

Marines: As a ruthless marine, Akainu shows little respect for his subordinates. He is willing to kill his own men on a whim when he is displeased by them and is willing to kill them to stop another enemy. For example, he murdered a marine who tried to flee from the island of Marineford. Who of which, did not want to die out of concern for his family. The latter of which, killed him for his lack of cowardice. On another occasion, he was fine with having a ship that had some marines on it destroyed in order to stop the Ohara scientist from escaping the island. As Fleet Admiral, he is yelling at his subordinates when he is not pleased by their mission. However, since the Shichibukai was abolished, Akainu shows caution to the Navy forces and was willing to keep the numbers that he have since their military power could not compete against Kaido and Big Mom. He ordered his troops to not let Rob Lucci to fight Luffy until Kizaru arrives at Egghead.
World Government: Akainu is shown to be loyal to the World Government. He abides to the ideology of Absolute Justice and is willing to enforce this justice at the expense of the civilian's safety and lives.
Kuzan/Aokiji (formerly): As his rival, Akainu shows hostility towards his former colleague. After he killed the Ohara survivors, Aokiji called Akainu a fool for his extreme actions. After their duel for fleet admiral, Akainu spared Aokiji and intended on him serving under him in the Marines. For Aokiji however, refused of taking orders from Akainu and quit the marines out of his hatred towards Sakazuki. When Aokiji left the Marines, Akainu shows no concern for him. At Hachinosu, Kuzan's hatred towards Sakazuki is so strong that he refused to return back into the Marines by Garp's demands as he will never serve under Sakazuki.
Borsalino/Kizaru: Akainu appears to be on good terms with Kizaru. When Kizaru volunteered to handle the situation on Kaido and Big Mom, Akainu told him to wait as they don't know the strength of Wano's samurais. When hearing Kizaru is heading to Egghead, Akainu allowed Borsalino of going to Egghead to aid Rob Lucci.
Issho/Fujitora: When Luffy and Law formed alliance and head to Wano, Akainu send Fujitora to deal with him. However, when Fujitora revealed the true incidents in Dressrosa and prevent the government cover-up, Akainu was furious at Fujitora and asked why he did not report the incident to headquarter before taking actions into his own hand. In response, Fujitora asked if he reported, Akainu would cover-up the incident as he told him cover-ups are important to save the dignity for the Marines. Akainu banned Fujitora from setting foot on any Marine Base unless he captured Luffy and Law. When Fujitora is in Mary Gloise, Akainu contacted Ryokugyu to kick him out. After the Shichibukai were abolished from the World Government, Akainu realized Fujitora's goal and told by the admiral to have faith in the SSG (Special Science Group). Akainu also revealed to Fujitora of Kaido and Big Mom's alliance, much to Issho's shock.
Sengoku: Akainu has shown to follow orders that his predecessor gave him during the Marineford War. At the same time, he can get angry at him. When Akainu was stressed out being a Fleet Admiral, Sengoku teased him which caused him to yell at him. While he interrupted Sengoku's meeting, Akainu was willing to tell his predecessor why the Navy could not go to Wano and was also calm around him. Akainu and Sengoku also talked about Kozuki Oden.
Gorosei: During Doflamingo's false resignation, Akainu confronts the Gorosei over their actions. He told them to not go out of their way to assist Doflamingo. The Gorosei did not like Akainu's attitude when they left the situation for Cipher Pol and blamed Akainu when Kuzan join Blackbeard which they considered a great shame for the Marines.
Ryokugyu: Ryokugyu is Akainu's successor and follower. Akainu ordered Ryokugyu to kick Fujitora out, but secretly disobey that order because he needs to fight Fujitora in order to kick him out. Akainu sent Ryokugyu at Wano Country to arrest Luffy, Law and Kid when Ryokugyu believed that he will receive praise from the fleet admiral. However, the mission has failed when Ryokugyu was forced to leave Wano due to Shanks' arrival.

Enemies[]

Monkey D. Luffy: Akainu is shown to have deep obsession with wanting to murder Luffy. Akainu often refers to Luffy as "Dragon's son" and considers him a major criminal that needs to be stopped. During the Marineford War, Akainu expressed an obsession with wanting to kill Luffy and was willing to pursue an incapacitated Luffy during the war despite the threat Blackbeard posed. Akainu is Luffy's Marine archenemy after he murdered his brother, Portgas D. Ace, and failed to try to kill him but left a massive scar on his chest after he escaped the Marineford War. When Luffy formed an alliance with Law, Akainu sent Fujitora to deal with him. When Akainu read the incident of Totto Land, Akainu got furious because of Luffy's trouble and regarded his mistakes after he was unable to kill him in the war at Marineford. Akainu shown disbelief that Luffy has become an Emperor. Akainu learns Luffy is on Egghead, Sakazuki shown his anger towards Luffy if he wanted to play war, the new Emperor should have consulted the Fleet Admiral first. Akainu still takes cautious when he is only going to let Lucci of fighting Luffy once Kizaru arrived. Luffy in return, holds an immense hatred towards Akainu for what he has done to him and murdering his brother, Ace.
Monkey D. Dragon: Akainu harbors an intense amount of hatred towards Dragon. It is unknown about the details of their interactions. Akainu has the knowledge of Dragon's relatives and attempted to take his son's life, Monkey D. Luffy, which failed.
Seven Warlords of the Sea: Like few marines, Akainu distrusts the Seven Warlords for not obeying the direct orders from the Government. He distrusted them as they were just pirates. When the Warlords were dissolved due to Crocodile and Donquixote Doflamingo, Akainu considered them as a necessary military force despite his distrust for them. With the Seven Warlords abolished, Akainu now considered the former warlords to be enemies to the government and like all pirates will not allow them to roam free and attack the public due to them being extremely dangerous criminals.
Trafalgar D. Water Law: When hearing Law's alignment with Luffy, Akainu sent Fujitora to Dressrosa. After Doflamingo's downfall, Law was revoked as a Shichibukai and increased his bounty 500,000,000 Berries. Akainu expressed interest in Fujitora killing Law for the latter's allegiance to Luffy. Akainu learned that Law is fighting against Blackbeard much of Akainu fury that he was forced to wait.
Jinbe: Akainu considered Jinbe as a traitor for his resignation for the Shichibukai. He attempted to give him mercy by handing over Luffy which Jinbe refused and protected him with his life. Akainu acknowledges that Jinbe was in his way of killing Luffy and that his attempts to save his life was futile. Akainu was willing to kill Jinbe along with Luffy during the war.
Crocodile: When Akainu attempted to kill Jinbe and Luffy, Crocodile intercepted him. Crocodile along with the Whitebeard Pirates was willing to stop Akainu from going after Luffy and Jinbe.
Edward Newgate: Akainu was Whitebeard's enemy. Unlike the other senior Marines like Garp and Sengoku, Akainu shows no respect for Whitebeard. They exchanged insults during their confrontation when Whitebeard told Akainu to light up the birthday cake in turn Akainu would rather light up for Whitebeard's funeral. Akainu did not like the reckless damage Whitebeard was doing to Marineford and told him to stop causing damage. During one of their battles, Akainu was ruthless in his battle and was willing to kill the latter off. Unlike most of the Marines, Akainu was fearless when facing Whitebeard by himself. When Akainu murdered Ace, Whitebeard fought him and nearly killed him although Akainu dealt a blow his face (in anime in stomach).
Portgas D. Ace: Akainu was invested in Ace's execution for being the son of Gol D. Roger and for being a pirate. He was willing to fight against the Whitebeard Pirates and their allies to ensure that Ace's execution was not interrupted. Similarly to how he sees pirates in general, Akainu had no respect for Ace and was invested in ensuring that the young pirate was executed. Akainu was also willing to get into a verbal argument with Ace over Whitebeard and did not mind the young pirate confronting him after Akainu insulted Whitebeard. During the confrontation, Akainu tries to kill Luffy in front of Ace which resulted in Ace taking the fatal blow. Despite giving Ace the fatal attack, Akainu was willing to kill off the young pirate further by destroying his body with a more powerful lava attack until his attack was deflected.
Shanks: After Luffy successfully escaped, Akainu cursed Shanks for interfering in his personal pursuit to go after and kill Luffy. When Shanks declared the Marineford War over, Akainu reluctantly conceded to Shank's demand and was visibly upset that he could not kill Luffy.
Marshall D. Teach: When Blackbeard was wreaking havoc in Marineford, Akainu was more interested in chasing after and attempting to kill an incapacitated Luffy. When Blackbeard claimed of his era after killed Whitebeard, Akainu shown to be shocked but ignored him and focused his attention on trying to kill Luffy. Despite the powers that Blackbeard possessed, he ran away with his crew when Akainu showed up. Akainu learned Blackbeard is fighting against Law much of his fury when Akainu was forced to wait.
Four Emperors: Akainu deemed the Four Emperors to be major threats. When he hears of Kaido and Big Mom's alliance, Akainu is shown to be cautious as he leaves them alone since he doesn't have enough military power against the Emperors' alliance. While still cautious about the Emperors, Sakazuki followed the Government's rule which is never to allow any Vice-Admirals or CP0 to engage one of the Four Emperors unless they need permission as well having an Admiral with them.
Zephyr: Under Zephyr's instructions, Akainu respected his former mentor as he viewed him as a father figure. However, now Akainu ordered his entire marines to stop Zephyr and the Neo-Marines even if it means killing Zephyr which Akainu initially did not want to kill him.
Jewelry Bonney: When Blackbeard got away, Akainu arrested Bonney after he heard the World Government have been worried which according to him makes his blood cold due to her disappearance. In response, Bonney hates both the Government and Marines as she will never forgive them. Akainu tells Bonney to cry all she wants, but that her father Kuma lost his will and mind to become the Government's weapon only for Bonney to call Sakazuki a liar.
Bartholomew Kuma: Kuma was once an ally of Akainu due to him being a Warlord, but now they are enemies since the Seven Warlords have been abolished. Akainu declared to Kuma now that the World Government cannot control him anymore, Akainu has no other choice but to eliminate him, since he cannot allow dangerous criminals to go loose. Akainu burned off half of Kuma's face and melted his leg when the Fleet Admiral demands where does Kuma is going, but Kuma escaped with his Devil Fruit powers. Akainu wondering where Kuma was heading off to in the state he was in.

Others[]

Celestial Dragons: Akainu does not like that CP0 follows the orders of the Celestial Dragons. This is especially shown during the major conflict in Dressrosa involving CP0 providing assistance to Doflamingo and the Gorosei's willingness to allow that to happen. When Kuma arrived at Mary Geoise, the Celestial Dragons complained to him about Kuma's rampage, how it inconvenienced them, and ordered Sakazuki to kill Kuma. After he failed to kill Kuma, the Celestial Dragons insulted Sakazuki for failing them and mocked him for his so-called "incompetence", calling Akainu a Fleet Admiral for nothing. Akainu ignored them and their insults.
Koby: Koby was horrified at Akainu when he saw him murder a marine official for deserting his post during the Paramount War. When Akainu was escalating the war in an attempt to kill all pirates, Koby stood up to Akainu and pleaded with him to stop escalating the conflict any further since their objective of executing Ace was already achieved. However, Akainu perceives Koby's pleads to be defiance against him and Absolute Justice and attempted to kill him out of anger until Shanks saved him.
Monkey D. Garp: After Akainu killed Ace during the Paramount War, Garp expressed extreme negativity towards Akainu for killing one of his sons. Garp approaches Akainu to try and kill him until Sengoku held him down. Garp admits to Sengokue that he intended to kill Akainu over Ace's death and told the former fleet admiral to hold him down to prevent it from happening.

Abilities and Powers[]

As the current fleet admiral of the Marines, Akainu has full commands over both the under ranking troops and the government's agents. He possessed the golden den-den mushi to summon the Buster Call to assault islands deemed to be threats. He had the ability to revoke a Shichibukai's title at any time before their disbandment.

Akainu is manipulative and deceiver when he provoked and mocked his enemies such as both Squard and Ace about Whitebeard.

Physical Strength[]

Akainu has superhuman strength to overpower Ace, Marco and Jinbei. He has immense durability after took attacks from both Marco and Vista with imbued Busoshoku Haki and nearly got killed by Whitebeard as well got severely injured in his duel for fleet admiral against Aokiji where Akainu has lost a chunk from his ear. With his magma, he has speed to chase his enemies.

Devil Fruit[]

Akainu ate the Magu-Magu no Mi a logia class devil fruit to burn everything to ashes with magma and became a Magma Human. His magma can burning things including fire such as Ace's fiery devil fruit. Akainu can boil water after unleashed his attacks. He can burn a giant ice into a magma coal.

Akainu's weaknesses are drowning and caught off guard by Seastone.

Haki[]

Akainu has two types of Haki (Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku).

Akainu use Busoshoku Haki to imbued himself and defend himself such as blocking Whitebeard's attack (along with Kizaru and Aokiji). Akainu's possession Kenbunshoku Haki to sense individual's presences and dodge with his own speed.

Biography[]

In Sakazuki's childhood, he wore tattered up clothes and held a dagger in his possession, with a cap labelled as "Justice", indicating he lived a rough childhood. When he was 23, he joined the marines alongside a 26 year old Borsalino.

Sakazuki's debut in the series features him immediately crossing the Moral Event Horizon by destroying a ship filled with innocent refugees of Ohara on the minuscule possibility that a criminal might have been on board, an action that horrified even his comrades. Since then, he rose through the ranks of the Marines and eventually became one of the Admirals, alongside Aokiji (who detested him for his cruelty and fanaticism), and Kizaru.

He is the one who killed Monkey D. Luffy's brother, Portgas D. Ace. His magma overpowered Ace's fire power, and punched him straight through the chest as Ace was trying to protect Luffy. He even tried to kill Coby when he said further fighting would be pointless, but luckily, Shanks saved him just in time. Through this horrible action, Akainu accomplished what no other villain ever could: completely breaking Luffy's spirit.

Within the two-year time-skip, Akainu officially became the new Fleet Admiral officially placing him as the commander of all the World Government's forces, which was later revealed to the Straw Hats by Jinbe at Fishman Island. According to Jinbe, since Akainu's commandeering of the Marines, the marines have become noticeably cruel under his ideologies of Absolute Justice.

Fleet Admiral Sakazuki became furious at Admiral Fujitora for revealing the true news of Dressrosa incident without even telling him. He asked why he did not report to him before taking action. Fujitora replied if he reports to him, he would have cover-up the incident. He suggests that cover-ups were needed to save the face of the World Government. Fujitora doesn't want to become a hero for something that he did not do. He argued to the Fleet Admiral about the credibility and dignity of the Marine Headquarter. Sakazuki banned Fujitora from every single Marine bases unless if he can capture both Luffy and Law.

After reading the news of Totto Land and Princess Koname was kidnapped by pirates, Sakazuki shows his fury of allowing this to happen.

After the Marines intercept the conversion between Kaido and Big Mom, Kizaru asked Sakazuki permission to handle the situation. However, the Fleet Admiral himself told Kizaru to wait since they don't know about the strength of the samurais of Wano.

After the Shichibukai abolished, Sakazuki talking with Fujitora of his goal and thought the Shichibukai were a necessary military and decided to place hope for Vegapunk's SSG. Sakazuki then revealed to Fujitora about Kaido and Big Mom forming an alliance, much of the Admiral's shock. Sakazuki interrupt Sengoku's meeting of the Yonkos and the story of Rocks D. Xebec and leave Wano alone since they have no military power. Sengoku and Sakazuki discussed of Kozuki Oden (the former commander of the second division of the Whitebeard Pirates).

After Kaido and Big Mom's defeat, Sakazuki sent Ryokugyu to Wano to arrest Luffy, Law and Kid but told him to not do thing unnecessarily. After hearing that Law and Blackbeard clashed, Akainu shown angered that he was forced to wait for the outcome. When hearing Luffy is on Egghead and Vegapunk (knowing CP0 were sent to kill him) teaming up with the Straw Hat Pirates, Akainu sent Kizaru to Egghead but also ordered his troops of telling Rob Lucci to wait until Kizaru's arrival which is unfortunately for the Fleet Admiral when Rob Lucci has disobeyed the direct order and engaged Luffy. Soon after Fleet Admiral Sakazuki arrived at Mary Geoise to deal with a rampaging Bartholomew Kuma at the order of the Celestial Dragons.
