Aiko Hatayama (, Hatayama Aiko?) is a main character from the Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest series.
She is a high school social studies teacher, who along with her students from Japan, was involved in the summoning incident and ended up in Tortus.
Appearance[]
Aiko is a petite woman often described as having a childlike figure by others. She has short dark-brown hair and brown eyes (green eyes in the anime).
As a teacher, she wears white shirt with a grey blazer (pink in the anime), a white neck scarf, a dark-brown skirt, brown stockings and dark heeled-shoes.
Personality[]
Aiko is a very responsible teacher and cares a lot for her students. She often misunderstands the peoples feelings of affection for her as being friendly. Even as a child, she would always focus on obeying the rules and reprimand anyone that broke them.
She had a strong moral nature, can be very stubborn and carries the belief that as a teacher, she should always protect her students and support them. This causes her to be too idealistic, to the point where she often contradicts herself. Such as not wanting to get her students to be involved in anything dangerous or to solve their problems through violence, yet later convincing her student Hajime to risk his life to protect the town of Ur when it was under the threat of a monster invasion, something she knew as a contradiction of her own beliefs. Furthermore, she attempts to reason with Yukitoshi and even wants to save his life after he tried to kill her.
After recognizing how most of her ideals were meaningless without the will to act, Aiko resolves herself to better protect her students instead of being the one being protected. This is displayed when she chooses to fight against the Holy Church alongside Tio. While she admit she didn't regret her actions after the battle, her strong morals still causes her a lot of pain because she had been responsible for the deaths of many people. She also stops trying to force her ideals on to others and now takes the time to consider the reasons for their actions, instead of expecting them to go along with her wishes.
Aiko is also very charismatic, leading her to be worshiped as a deity in Tortus. This is the result of her hard working nature, strong moral character and her cute appearance. She has always been terrible at keeping secrets and tends to openly express her feelings, which makes it easy for those who know her to guess what is bothering her. This allows her family and childhood friend Taichi Furukawa to figure out her lover is actually one of her students.
After becoming one of Hajime's wives, Aiko picks up some of his excessive traits. This includes being brutal against anyone that would threaten her family, and using her magic in ways that defy common sense, without consideration. Furthermore, she has developed a need to use her spirt magic to help anyone in need of mental healing, to the post of her being obsessive about it. Although she still fundamentally opposes using violence, she has resolved herself to take aggressive action in order to protect those that she cares for.
History[]
Aiko grew up in a small town to a family of farmers on her mother's side. When she was young, she was framed for stealing a bicycle by one of her classmates, who was the son of one of the town's wealthy and influential families. The only person who stood by her side, other than her family and friends, was her teacher that all the students despised for his strict attitude. He managed to clear Aiko's name through his efforts, but was forced to retire due to angering the boy's family. His willingness to stick up for Aiko inspired her to become a teacher that would always support her students. She eventually grew up to become a high school social studies teacher.
When Aiko and her class were summoned to Tortus, they were told about humanity's war with the demons by Pope Ishtar Langbard of the Holy Church. Aiko wanted the students to abstain from fighting in the war against the demons, but gave up when Kouki Amanogawa rallied the rest of them to help the people of their new world. When the students obtained their status plates and learned of their stats, many of them were making fun of Hajime Nagumo for his low stats. Aiko tried to console him by showing that her stats were not that strong as well, but only to have the opposite effect as her magic power was still higher and she had more skills than him. Furthermore, she also possessed an extremely rare vocation of "Farmer" and was immediately sent away to help with the Heiligh Kingdom's agriculture.
After Hajime was believed to be dead while exploring the Great Orcus Labyrinth, most of the other students were traumatized by the turn of events. Aiko confronted Ishtar for trying to get them to fight again, and threatened to cease using her skills as a farmer for the Heiligh Kingdom. Ishtar compromised with Aiko and agreed to let the students continue to fight if it was their choice.
Aiko left the Kingdom to begin her task of improving its crops. She was accompanied by several of her students and templar knights from the Holy Church. While she and the others were visiting the lakeside town of Ur, one of the students that escorted her, Yukitoshi Shimizu, disappeared without a trace. Aiko was concerned for his safety and wanted to search for him. She would later discover that Hajime was still alive after hearing his name in a conversation that he was having with his companions Yue and Shea at the Water Sprite Inn. Aiko was shocked by the sudden changes to Hajime's figure and attitude and tried to get him to explain what had happened, but he was uncooperative in his answers. This prompted one of her templar knight guards, David Zahler, to confront him for his rude attitude. After he made Shea scared of him because she is a beastmen and after he threatened Yue after being called a small man, Hajime shot David in the head with a rubber bullet and left his classmates by claiming that he wanted nothing to do with them anymore and that he had his own objectives.
That evening, Aiko was in her room at the Inn and couldn't stop thinking about Hajime and how he had changed so much. Hajime suddenly entered her room by using his transmutation skills to break the lock on her door. Aiko was shocked by his actions, and was concerned about what his intentions were. Hajime calmed Aiko down by telling her about all the things he had learned while exploring the abyss after everyone believed him to have died. He explained how that the god of Tortus were just using him and everyone else as pawns for his twisted game and how he was searching for a way to get home. As he was about to leave Aiko's room after telling her this news, Aiko told Hajime that his classmate Kaori still believed him to be alive and that she never stopped looking for him in the Great Orcus Labyrinth. Hearing this prompted Hajime to tell Aiko that the reason he fell into the abyss in the first place was the result of another classmate intentionally aiming a spell at him while making it look like a random shot, and that the only reason this happened was due to Hajime's friendly relationship with Kaori. This further shook up Aiko and she was unable to sleep for the whole night.

Relationship[]
Family Members[]
Hajime Nagumo[]
At first, she regarded Hajime as one of the students she had to take care of and like Kaori, respected Hajime for his immense kindness. After his apparent death, Aiko was so shocked that she passed out, feeling great remorse and responsibility for him, and doing everything she can to protect her surviving students, even using herself as Leverage. When they reunited in the Lakeshore Town of Ur, Aiko was extremely relieved to know that Hajime had survived, but was dismayed that he was accompanied by two beautiful women Yue and Shea who claimed to be in love with Hajime, mistaking the fact that Hajime was too busy with womanizing to return.
Aiko was shocked by Hajime's new cold and ruthless personality such as his complete refusal to aid the Heiligh Kingdom for the sake of his classmates and his teacher and also threatened to kill Chase for attempting to steal his gun. Aiko was deeply saddened that Hajime had completely changed from his old self, but was relieved that he had new friends that he could count on. Hajime had always respected Aiko for her dedication to her students, and had therefore chosen to tell Aiko the real reason for his refusal to join them by telling her what he had learned from Oscar Orcus about Ehit's true nature and how he had summoned all of them to Tortus as pawns in his mad game of war, knowing that being one of her students himself Aiko will certainly believe his words.
Later after Hajime had killed Shimizu, knowing what he done to save her from regretting the death of Shimizu from an attack meant for her, she became aware of him as the opposite sex. Later Aiko is extremely worried when Ishtar and King Eliheid SB Heiligh called Hajime a heretic for his absolute refusal to obey them, so Aiko desperately tried to convince them to change their mind, but to no avail. Fearing that Kouki and her other students might start attacking Hajime at the instigation of the Holy Church and the Heiligh Kingdom, Aiko decides to warn her students of the true nature of Ehit, by asking Shizuku to gather them all together to dinner time so she can tell them what she has learned from Hajime, but was kidnapped by Noint before she could do so. Later she and Tio destroyed the Holy Church because she didn't want Hajime to die. She later accepts her love for Hajime even though she is still troubled by the fact that she is older and his teacher. However, Hajime later pointed out both of her concerns are meaningless, as he will eventually no longer be her student after he graduates and their age difference is of no concern considering how much older Yue and Tio are in comparison.
Kaori Shirasaki[]
As one of her students, Aiko also dearly care for Kaori, and was close enough to exchange communication letters with each other while in Tortus. Aiko is also aware of Kaori's love for Hajime, which drives her determination to find him in the Great Orcus Labyrinth and was shocked to learn that Kaori had been the reason why Hiyama had tried to kill Hajime in the first place and how Kaori would be in danger in being the target of Hiyama's crazed lust. Despite wishing it was just a misunderstanding, Aiko's fears were later proven when Hiyama actually killed Kaori to make her his undead slave, showing great concern for Kaori, thus Aiko did not blame Hajime for murdering Hiyama.
Yue[]
Yue is Hajime's companion, lover, and later first wife. During when Hajime reunites with Aiko at Ur, Yue is annoyed at Aiko due to her constant attempts to get Hajime to explain what had happened to him after his apparent death. She also grows jealous of how close Aiko appears to be with Hajime as her teacher, as well has her words having an impact on him with regards to wanting him to find happiness by fighting for more than just himself. While Yue is unsettled with Aiko at first, she also finds her somewhat adorable and constantly mentally compares her to a small animal. Before the battle of Ur, Yue takes Aiko to her room at the town's inn and expresses her gratitude for helping Hajime by telling him to live for the sake of others, while at the same time revealing the full extent of her relationship with Hajime by explaining that the two of them already had sex, much to Aiko's shock.
Shea Haulia[]
She is one of Hajime's wives. After the battle of Ur, Shea risked her life to save Aiko when she was about to be killed by the demon Reiss due to her being Hajime's precious teacher.
Shizuku Yaegashi[]
Likewise with Kaori, Aiko also shares a close friendship with Shizuku, one of her students, as she is the only one Aiko would discuss her thoughts and worries with. Aiko also trusted Shizuku enough to asked her to gather her classmates in to order to reveal what Hajime learned about Ehit. While Shizuku also care dearly about Aiko but was dismayed to learn she had fallen for Hajime as well.
Tio Klarus[]
She and Tio destroyed the Holy Church and the Pope for intervening with Hajime's fight with Noint.
Myu[]
Myu is Aiko´s adopted daughter. Like Hajime, Remia and Hajime´s other wives, Aiko is affectionate and protective of Myu.
Close Associates[]
David Zahler[]
He is a Templar knight of the Holy Church and is in charge of Aiko's bodyguards while she roams the kingdom to use her powers to aid in improving its agriculture. At first, he and the other knights attempted to seduce her in order to make her more loyal to the Holy Church, but they are moved by her kindness and have started being loyal and submissive to her. After learning that Aiko is partially responsible for destroying the Holy Church's Divine Temple and killing Pope Ishtar Langbard, David and the other guards forgive her due to all they had learned from following her. He is now a devoted follower of Aiko and the new religion that is based off her new title as the "Fertility Goddess".
Yuka Sonobe[]
One of Aiko's students. Yuka cares greatly for Aiko well-being and offers to be her bodyguard while traveling the Heiligh Kingdom.
Taichi Furukawa[]
Aiko's childhood friend. The two had a brother-sister relationship, but Taichi begins to develop feelings for her and finally confesses his love for her after she returns to Earth. Aiko could not respond to his feelings since she has chosen to be with Hajime. That puts a strain on their relationship, but Aiko is convinced that they will be friends again someday.
Other Students[]
Having resolved to be like her former teacher, Aiko cares immensely about the safety of her students to the point that she was willing to threaten the King and the Pope after they tried to force her students to continue training after Hajime fell into the Abyss. Despite Shimizu and Hiyama's respective atrocities, Aiko had still wished they could live to make amend for their actions. Aiko's devotion to her students along with her childlike cuteness makes her extremely popular with her students, nearly on pair with Kouki, Kaori and Shizuku's popularity. When Aiko was mysteriously abducted by Noint and imprisoned in highest floor of the Holy Church in the Divine Mountain, Shizuku, Yuka and her closest friends desperately searched for her non-stop and was prepared to personally climbed the Divine Mountain to find her if they had to showing how much they reciprocate her devotion. However, not all of Aiko's students reciprocate her care as when Shimizu was even on verge of death had felt absolutely no remorse for trying to kill Aiko. Eri and Hiyama even exploited Aiko's abduction by Noint as a great chance to realize their nefarious plans to kill their fellow classmates in a death trap and to murder and zombify Kouki and Kaori into their respective undead slaves. As Hajime expected, Aiko was able to convince all of his classmates of Ehit's true nature and even Kouki despite his misguided sense of justice was forced to believed Aiko's words after Eri had exposed her true twisted evil nature and her schemes of betrayal including the fact that Aiko was in reality abducted by Noint.
Enemies[]
Ehit[]
She at first was respectful to Ehit, but after learning the truth about Ehit by Hajime, she lost all respect for him. When she and Liliana exposes Ehit's true nature to the people of Heiligh, this caused the worshippers of Ehit to turn against him leaving Tortus as a godless world.
Noint[]
She was kidnapped by Noint before she could tell the students the truth about Ehit. She was later freed by Hajime from her prison cell.
Yukitoshi Shimizu[]
Yukitoshi Shimizu was Aiko's student. She cares for him like the rest. But Shimizu holds a grudge towards his teacher and his classmates and betrayed them in his attempted to be a true "Hero". He took her hostage to force Hajime to give him all of his guns until a hooded person shot both Aiko and Shimizu. Aiko begged Hajime to save Shimizu but was mercilessly killed by him due to him being beyond help as well as the fact that he didn’t want her to realize that he had died because she was the actual target of the attack that killed Shimizu.
Daisuke Hiyama[]
Daisuke Hiyama was Aiko's former student for his all bullying towards Hajime. She also saw Hajime murder Hiyama for his betrayal and for temporarily murdering Kaori. After learning that Hiyama earlier attempted to kill Hajime once before in the Great Orcus Labyrinth, Aiko no longer had a single trace of sympathy left for Hiyama. Despite her knowing that Hiyama was a traitor and wouldn’t forgive him for what he had done, Aiko tells Hajime that if he hadn't killed Hiyama, she would have wanted him to atone his sins only to realize that he was beyond any redemption due to him being blinded by his own delusions.
Eri Nakamura[]
Eri Nakamura was Aiko's former student who is also a traitor. Aiko once treated her student nicely. Eri, however, never cared for her teacher but attempted to kill her and her classmates due to her and the others that stood in her way to make Kouki her boyfriend.
Ishtar Langbard[]
The former Pope of the Holy Church. Since they first met, Aiko had been at odds with the Pope, who wanted her students to fight the Demons in the name of Ehit while she wanted to get her students back home. While Aiko tried to argue against him because she didn't want her students fighting in a war, he was able to convince Kouki, which resulted in the rest of her student agreeing to help them in their war. After Hajime fell into the Abyss and many of her students were traumatized, she took a firmer stance against Ishtar and the Holy Church when they still tried to convince them to fight, even using herself as Leverage, which worked. Despite this and Aiko growing fame as the Fertility Goddess, she wasn't able to stop Ishtar and the Holy Church from declaring Hajime a heretic for his refusal to obey them. When Noint kidnapped Aiko and imprisoned her at the top of the Divine Mountain, Ishtar prevented her students from coming to save her, lying to them that she was arguing against them making Hajime a heretic. Aiko finally came to blows with Ishtar and the Holy Church when they tried to aid Noint in her fight with Hajime. Working alongside Tio, they were able to blow up the Holy Church Temple, killing Ishtar and all the bishops inside. While her morals caused her great pain for killing them, she admitted she didn't regret her actions.
